In most places, unlike very large urban cities, design is more about aesthetics than about maximizing space. In New York City, the aesthetics are intricately linked to making certain that a space does not "feel" small and functions well. Luckily, even the smallest space can be transformed into a special, perfect, little gem. Larger spaces (like lofts) can be divided into conversation areas that feel intimate and cozy. This takes careful thought about the function and scale of each piece of furniture, the colors and furniture plan.
On an individual level, interior design is about creating shelter from the intensity of life in the street. A respite, in which to recharge the spirit and rest the body. In order to feel like home the space needs to reflect the taste, needs and personality of its inhabitant.
Reasons for needing the assistance of an interior designer, to create this personal and meaningful space, are varied:
- Many need help figuring out what is liked, because it's easier to figure out what is disliked.
-A designer helps some pull it all together.
-Others need a designer to shop for them, because there's no time to do it themselves.
-A designer can help people who have recently moved, use furnishings from the old apartment, in different ways in the new apartment.
-A designer helps new couples find a style that is "theirs".
-One person arrives at a point in life, that affords the opportunity to replace their college furnishings.
-A designer will make the most of available space, when a 40 year old bathroom or kitchen needs to be updated.
All these people need to be guided through the design process by a perceptive designer who will help them determine how much it will cost, decide what to keep and what to give away, will narrow the choices to make sure the project is not overwhelming. A designer can participate in project management, if construction is involved.
